They come to China to travel, study, and do business, etc. The datas in the website Baidu show that there are more than 50 thousand foreign long-term residents in Beijing and foreign floating population reaches 200 thousands.1 It is predicted that about 550 thousand foreigners will come to Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games. Most of them speak English instead of Chinese. Under such circumstances, English public signs will play a very important role, because these signs will help foreigners to find their way in a new environment or get the information they need. According to Barry Gray, the Chairman of International Graphical Symbols Committee,?“Signing affects everybody-travelers, shoppers, visitors, drivers, and so on. Whether in the course of business or pleasure, bad signing is at best irritating and at worst can be life threatening and dangerous.” 2Under such circumstances, it is quite necessary to analyze the abundant errors present in English translation of public signs and provide strategies to eliminate these errors.
