With stunning views overlooking the River Thames and the Docklands area of east London, it has held royal interests since it was first inherited by King Henry Vs brother, the Duke of Gloucester, in 1427. Deer were later introduced to the park by Henry VIII and Charles II commissioned Sir Christopher Wren to build the world- famous Royal Observatory on top of the hill. The Royal Observatory is where the time system called Greenwich Mean Time was originally developed. Scientists measured a line running between the North and South Poles, and which passed directly through the Observatory. This line is the Earths zero degree line of longitude and is named the Greenwich Meridian. Since 1884, it is where all time zones around the world are measured from. On the banks of the Thames lies the Royal Naval Hospital which was built in 1694 on the site of the original Greenwich Palace.
