Definition and symptoms of social phobia Feasible treatments of social phobia Contents A phobia is a specific kind of fear (Beck et al, 2005). Excessive fear, self- consciousness and avoidance of social situation (Hofmann et al, 2009). What is social phobia? How common is social phobia? Social phobia is the third largest mental health care problem in the world today (Richards, 2012). Lifetime prevalence—from 7% to 13% of world population (Antony et al, 2009). Millions of people around the world suffer from social phobia and related conditions (Helsley, 2008). How common is social phobia? (NIMH, 2010) Symptoms of social phobia Emotional Physical Behavioural Excessive anxiety Intense worry Extreme fear Nervousness Blushing Shortness of breath Upset stomach Excessive sweating shaking Avoiding Staying alone Hiding Escaping (Smith and Jaffe-Gill, 2012) Potential complications (Starcevic, 2010) PROS: relieve the symptoms immediately convenience and cost-effective CONS: calm the symptoms, but not solve easily be addicted Feasible treatments of social phobia Definition: CBT for social anxiety disorder is a time-limited, present-focused approach with the goal of identifying and modifying distorted ideas and supporting more adaptive behaviors in social and performance situations.
