College students who are receiving higher education are the future and hope of the country. As a systematic special group, they not only possess the congenital superiority to contact and accept the animal protection knowledge, but also have enormous potential to practise animal protection act. Their animal protection conception represents the mainstream thought and direction of young people. Besides, it has a direct impact on the construction of socialistic harmonious society and the future of a nation. So, by the survey of college students animal protection conception, we can understand Chinas national mainstream thoughts about animal protection at present. It has a important theoretical and practical significance for us to further analyse the internal cause of present situation about Chinese behindhand animal protection and animal protection policies, to guide the correct animal protection conception, to upgrade the animal protection mode of the whole society, and to establish and perfect the law system about the animal protection. According to the different degree of people caring animal, the study divided animal protection concepts into three general concepts: animal discrimination, animal welfare and animal rights conception. Combining interview and questionnaire, the study made an in-depth analysis on the 725 college students’ animal protection concepts. These students are from five different universities in Wuhan. The results show that college students’ animal protection consciousness level is lower and there are great individual differences.
