The utilization of waste is urgent. The solution is to use the in highway engineering as a kind of resource. On the other hand, Beijing as the capital of China, the quality and performance of highway pavement are more required. In recent years, the steel slag is used in asphalt mixture. In this paper, the steel slag and its mixture are researched. The following laboratory works are included in this paper: At first，The properties of steel slag as the coarse aggregate of asphalt mixture are tested. As a contrast, the properties of normal aggregate such as basalt and limestone are listed and compared. According to steel slag, the different c haracters such as the expansion and radiation are tested and analyzed. It is concluded by these tests that steel slag can fulfill all the requirements of coarse aggregate, and thus it is possible to be used in asphalt mixture. Secondly，The skid-resistant property of steel slag is emphasized and it is found that steel is superior on abrasion resistance. Thus it is more suitable to improve the skid resistance performance of the mixture. Thirdly，The density of steel slag is larger than normal aggregate, whic h is the main concern in mixture design. In this paper, different kind of mixtures such as dense –graded mixture、SMA and SAC are designed. The gradation of the aggregate is the most important factor. Fourthly，The performance such as high-temp property、moisture-susceptibility and low-temp anti-cracking performance are tested and analyzed. To steel slag aggregate, the evaluation of the expansion potential is a must. Finally ， Two trial sections are paved and the construction procedure is researched. The performance of the two trial sections are detected continuously and it illustrated that steel slag mixture exhibits excellently.
