AbstractHuman Abstract Human beings’relation with time and the power they give it is rather obvious. People’s different perceptions of time can cause confusion,irritation,even alienation in communication.Current studies on time perceptions mainly localize on presenting facts.Some studies focus on the seemingly different concepts of time in different cultures.Latest studies bring forward James Paul Gee’S discourse analysis theory as a means to study temporal representations,which are of significance in the field in question.But these studies are based on the divisions of large cultural groups of people such as Chinese culture,western culture or American culture.This Call easily lead to stereotyping.In actual commtmication, members of the same cultural group may have different ways of communication due to their age,gendeq career or living environment,Members of diflbrent cultural groups may have much in common despite their differences.Stereotyping overlooks the differences among individuals and ignores the possible similarities of members of different cultural groups.In their book“Intercultural Communication:A Discourse Approach”,the Scollons put forward“discourse system”as the central concept of their discourse approach.People belong to a complexity of discourse,for example,eastern discourse,western discourse, generational discourse and gender discourse,etc.The four aspects of a discourse system are,ideology,socialization,forms ofdiscourse and face systems. With the aim to limit stereotyping,this thesis adopts the Scollons’discourse approach to analyze the time perceptions of different generations of Chinese and Americans.The analysis based on the four aspects of a discourse system provides detailed explanations to the historical.cultural and social elements mat cause the differences in people’S time perceptions.This thesis discovers that there are some differences as well as similarities in the time perceptions of ditYerent generations of Chinese and Amerieans.
