Draped wiremesh and cablemesh slope protection has been utilized by S诅teS for many years tO control rockfal|.The initial design and specifications for these draped wiremesh slope protection systems were developed using empirical methods by WSDOT in the late 1950’s for slopes that were generally less than 75 feet in height.Over the
years the draped wireraesh slope protection designs have been modified by other Slates SO thatn缸.mnwidewenowhave alargenumberofvariationsofdesigns.none ofwhichhave been quantified.
D髓ped cablemesh slope protection designs wele instituted in the late 1980’S to accommodate larger roekfall sizes,but again these designs were based Oil the empirically derived wiremesh slope protection designs with,飘3me modifications in terms of vertical cable sizes and Spacing,Both draped wiremesh and cablemesh slope protection systems are now being installed regularly on slopes far k excess of 75 feet in height.Design guidance for draped wiremesh and cablemesh slope protection systems for slope heights exceeding 75 feet[tie non—existent.
Current consensus among rock slope stabilization practitioners and contractors nationally is that$(Xfie elements of the currently consmmted draped wirernesh and cablemesh slope protection systems may be conservative and that some of the design
elements may not be required.Although this may be the case,WSDOT has experie_aced
problems with these systems indicating that certain design elements may in fact be under-
designed.The problem is that there is no clear understanding what design elements are
critical to the wiremesh and cablemesh systems because the design is empirical and has never been quantified.Additionally,in some states draped slope protection systems ale being installed on slopes that are subjected to concentrated loads such as pockets of rock and external loads such as deep snow on flatter slopes.There is little information on what influence these concentrated/external loa
