Impact Evaluation on Implementing Bus Rapid Transit System based on VISUM Simulation Specialty: Planning Management of Transportation Name: Zhang Chi Instructor: Associate Professor Chen Dapeng ABSTRACT At the beginning of this thesis, the Green Corridor which is an abounded railway used to connect Malaysia and Singapore has been introduced as study background. Along with the fast growth of population and traffic demand in Singapore, some new traffic infrastructures need to be built at this undeveloped area. As an efficient, environment friendly and high volume transit system, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is a good choice. After that, the concept and advantages of BRT has been introduced. Based on the origin of BRT, its importance has been discussed and the current developing condition of BRT around the world have been analysed and compared. Based on the above mentioned study background, one BRT system has been designed along the Green Corridor, and the macro simulation software VISUM has been applied to build the pre-BRT and after-BRT models which mainly consist of study area and traffic network. Based on the four-step model, i.e. trip generation, trip distribution, mode choice and trip assignment, the models have been validated by using goodness-of- fit analysis. After the VISUM quantitative analysis of current traffic condition, the BRT system has been added into the existing traffic network. The performance and utilization of BRT system have been analysed by VISUM model. Based on the results of VISUM simulation, the mobility, coverage, fare collection strategy of the BRT system has been analysed. By comparing the network performance, traffic analysis (transfer time, number of transfers, and access distance) and ridership of pre-BRT and after-BRT models, the impact on traffic condition of the BRT system has been evaluated, and the quality of service of the BRT system has been examined.
