Stylistic Analysis of Symbolism in The Great Gatsby
Abstract:The Great Gatsby is the masterpiece of famous American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. Symbolism is widely used in this novel: the green light located at the end of the Buchanans dock, the valley of ashes, the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, Gatsbys house and the West Eggs and East Eggs. All of these images are used to interpret the disillusion of Gatsbys American dreams as well as the social moral decay.

F. Scott Fitzgerald, as one of the great stylists in American literature and is the spokesman of a crucial and revealing period in the cultural history of his country. His masterpiece The Great Gatsby, Written in 1925, is often referred to as “The Great American Novel, and as the quintessential work which captures the mood of the Jazz Age. T. S. Eliot read this book several times and commented that it was the first step that American fiction has taken since Henry James (Eliot 310). In this novel, Fitzgerald expressed that the American dream has been destroyed by the desire for materialism. At the beginning,Gatsby has a pure dream, but he becomes corrupted in his quest towards that dream. In order to fully express his ideas Fitzgerald wisely applies many meaningful symbols to accentuate the story.
1 Definition of Symbolism
According to the Oxford dictionary symbolism means the practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events, or relationships. Symbol is a way of using something integral to the work to reach beyond the work and engage the world of value outside the work. (W
