Donations to NGOs such as charity funds slumped to RMB 840m in the period from June to August,
compared with the RMB6.3b from March to May, data from the China Charity and donation information center
revealed. Statistics also showed that total public donations didn’t decrease substantially, with RMB 12.1b recorded
from June to August and RMB15.1b from March to May. Officials said donations directly offered to the
government and individuals had increased. The Beijing News commented that charities in China are suffering
severe pains as the public has lost confidence in charity organizations due to a series of scandals starting from the
“Guo Meimei incident” in the last few months.
