TCVM DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF FEMALE INFERTILITY IN LARGE ANIMALS Song Dalu, Ronald Koh * * Introduction In the perspective of TCVM, large animal female infertility can be divided into two major categories. They are congenital and acquired infertilities. This article will only discuss female acquired infertility in large animals. This type of infertility is mainly caused by poor nutrition, improper management, climate upheaval, lack of acclimatization, poor breeding technique, and weak body. From TCVM standpoints, the reproductive function of animals is related to the Kidney, Liver, Ren (Conceiving Vessel) Channel and Chong (Penetrating) Channel. Conception may be difficult if the energy to those organs or channels, either from overwork or other health issues, is deficient. Below are some of the more common TCVM patterns, Bian-zheng (pattern differentiation), and treatment protocols for female fertility issues. TCVM Pattern Differentiation and Treatment Qi and Blood Deficiency: this type of infertility is caused by poor feeding, improper management, as well as ovarian disorders. Main symptoms are emaciation, an unkempt rough coat, vaginal relaxation with frequent pop sounds, fatigue, palpitations, decreased appetite, silent estrous, prolonged diestrous, and difficulty in conceiving.
