New Elliptical Flap Option Tighter Spot Separation 5th generation iFS = (2.0-8.0 microns) vs 4th generation IntraLase FS (4.0-10.0 microns) * A remarkable feature of the new iFS is the propriety inverted bevel-in side cut for fully customized biomechanically engineered flaps. With the 4th generation IntraLase FS the side cut was only programmable from the ranges of 30°-90° now with the new iFS you have the option of programming the side cut angle up to 150°. The benefits to having a bevel in side cut are: Better wound healing for the best biomechanical stability of the post LASIK cornea Increased flap adhesion post-operatively for optimal wound healing Virtually effortless flap lift, replacement, and positioning for optimal flap stability Significantly reduced flap gutter *Note to rep: Less than 90° side cut angle = bevel out / greater than 90° side cut angle = bevel in) * AMO has made a conscious decision to use the word elliptical rather than oval. The iFS enables the surgeon to choose up to 12% ovality to enhance the preservation of biomechanical stability. The use of the word oval often insights controversy among refractive surgeons, so our 510(k) submittal elected to use the word elliptical. The elliptical flap was created to reduce the overall diameter of the flap (vertically) in order to enhance the preservation of the vital lamellar fibers along the outer edges (superiorly and inferiorly) of the cornea. The increased preservation of the lamellar fibers maintains the stability of the cornea allowing for a more even distribution of biomechanical forces. The elliptical flap hinge may be strategically located to maximize the stromal bed exposure for full delivery of the excimer ablation.
