What?s more, there exists semantic counter-activation between the dynamic verbs and the particle up, so the verbs in V+UP construction are positive or neutral in prosody. Under the same image schema, the semantically similar verbs can all collocate with up. Various senses of the particle up are related to each other and non-literal meanings are seen in terms of metaphorical extensions. A large number of senses of V+UP construction share the features of Family Resemblance. In learning and memorizing the semantic meanings of V+UP construction, special attention should be paid to the metaphorical thinking underlying these linguistic expressions. Under the guidance of these theories: that is image schema theory, prototypical theory, basic-level categories and conceptual metaphor, language learners can comprehend and master their meaning extensions relatively well. Many phrasal verbs used in V+UP construction are polysemous. Nevertheless, they are not unsystematic from the central meaning to the peripheral one. Recognizing the conceptual metaphor, leaners will surely be able to learn phrasal verbs faster and retain them longer in memory. It is hoped that this thesis is helpful to language learners and dictionary compilers.
