Rapid and automated test system has received more and more attention by the device suppliers. This paper studies on some test system problem for optical communication devices in detail, and gives the analysis results. Some designments on improving the capabilities of the systems are put forward and an important method of test system validity analysis is introduced. Firstly, this paper researches on the basal situation of the optical communication device test system and gives the main test parameters and basic methods. After that, measurement system analysis (MSA) is introduced for theories prepare of test system validity analysis. Then, some researches at the output power stability of tunable laser are done in the paper to find the root reasons that always affect the laser source stable output. After improvements, 1310nm, 1490nm, 1550nm laser source output power fluctuate within ±0.03dB, 1620nm form -0.09dB to 0.02dB. Secondly, the paper designs a splitter automatic test system which could offer the insertion loss (IL) and polarization dependent loss (PDL). Compared with the traditional splitter test system, this system successfully solves two knotty problems— laser source stable output and splicing point excess loss. The system greatly reduced the equipment redundancy and testing efficiency increases at least 25%. Test data reliability ascends further. It is worth mentioning that the test of other optical communication devices can be carried out by this system. At last, system validity analysis must be considered. By V-groove stability experiment and fiber pigtail end face tolerance experiment, we prove the splitter automatic test system has high stability.
