ii ii Abstract Relevant theory as a theory in pragmatics has a strong illustrative power for all kinds of language phenomena including metaphor and irony. Relevant theory insists that language communication is a mutual manifesting process from recognition to reasoning, the goal of communication is to change people’s cognitive context. The goal of understanding the language is reached by reasoning and the construction of language situation. Efforts should be made in dealing with utterance, with the achievement of some cognitive effects. The relationship between them is relevance. Any verbal communication is guided by relevant theory. Similarly, irony is also oriented by relevant theory as other language phenomena. In the framework of relevant theory, irony is speakers’ response to other people’s ideas. At the same time, negative attitude is expressed to reach the ironic effects. This paper aims to illustrate how to understand irony in the framework of relevant theory in Pride and Prejudice based on the justification of ironic opinions in relevant theory, its feasibility and the strong interpretative power of irony. Through the analysis of irony in macro-speech and micro-speech acts in Pride and Prejudice, conclusion is made: firstly, relevant theory has rational interpretation to irony which broads the new angle of researches on irony; secondly, putting linguistics theories into concrete discourse will assist our understanding of the literary works; thirdly, language research can not break away from literary works, the research on literary works without language research will not be conducted to the fullest extent; fourthly, more interest is expected to be stimulated to Pride and Prejudice.
