M M sc Dissertation Shanghi Jiao Tong University ABSTRACT In this thesis．the concept of process planning was introduced as the systematic determination of the detailed methods by which work parts can be manufactured economically and competitively from raw material to desired form．To improve the manufacturing productivity．four key iSSHeS have to be consistently identified are improvement in product quality，reduction in manufacturing lead—time and cost， flexibility of manufacturing processes and environmental impacts．0ur contribution in this thesis was to improve the selection and design of blank workpiece that Jeads to increase the material utilization and reduce the time and cost of production and consequently improve productivity；this contribution can be summarized as follows． We analyzed the situation for manufacturing companies．we noticed that the needs for different merchandise grows faster than ever．at the same time their Iife cycle becomes shorter，the significant trend are f1)product variety f2)smal J；n-process restrictions，this needs high flexibility in design and manufacturing aspects Process planning plays this role For this reason and others CAPP had received much attention in recent years Noticed in recent years world is running out of mineral resources and the price of material will continually rise in the future．correct design of blank workpiece will results not only in decrease production time and cost but also save resources and reduce pollution and contamination．The criteria of stock design in planning stage are r1 1 assuring the quality of stock(2)minimize machining requirements(3)increasing the utilIzation of material f4、reducing the manufacturing cost and lead time Literature concern with the topic‘CAPP’in recent years has been completely analyzed．a survey in recent literature shows that current research efforts continue to foCUS on variant as welI as generative and hybrid systems with both artjficiaI intelligence based techniques at the same ti
