Therapeutic communication is a goal –directed ,focused form of dialogue used as a tool in health care to promote a client s well-being and positive response to treatment Definition Active listening is a dynamic interactive process in which a nurse (1) hears a clients message (2) decodes its meaning (3) provides feedback to the client regarding the nurses understanding of the message. Body actions: smiling, nodding, leaning forward. Words:“mm” of uh huh,” “Oh really,”,“go on.” “Are you saying that...(Repeat clients words)?” “You mean...[repeat clients words]?” Minimal Cues and Leads Restatement Therapeutic Listening Responses “You sound really frustrated because the treatment is taking longer than you thought it would.” “Could you describe what happened in sequence?”“Im not sure I understand what you mean.
