100G Transport vs. 100 Gigabit Ethernet
• 100G transport is the underlying optical wavelength rate in the network
– Standardized by the ITU-T SG15 at OTU4 in December 2009
– Specifies 112 Gbit/s of data transmission including payload plus overhead bits
– Payload can be 100 Gbit/s client signal or a mix of aggregated lower-speed traffic
• i.e., 10 channels of 10 Gbit/s aggregated up to 100 Gbit/s for transport
– Due to pent-up demand for capacity, 100G transport has exploded in the market
• 100GE is a layer 2 Ethernet interface defined by the IEEE
– IEEE 802.3ba standard was ratified in June 2010 and was the first IEEE standard ever to
simultaneously specify two new Ethernet speeds – 100GE and 40GE
– 100GE requires 100GE interfaces on switches and routers though WAN transport of 100GE can
be over wavelengths (using ITU-T OTU4)
– 100GE Ethernet services from carriers require a 100 Gigabit Ethernet handoff
• 100G transport and 100GE describe different technologies and their trends and
trajectories are very different!
