大学英语写作 The Comparison and Contrast Essay Comparison and contrast essay is very common in academic writing. When someone wants to show how ideas, people or things are similar or different, comparison and contrast essay would be the best choice. In addition, comparison and contrast are often used to support a point or persuade the reader. For example, in an engineering class, you might compare and contrast two prototypes to explain why one is more efficient than the other. Definition Comparison is an act of examining similarities. That means when someone compares two things, he/she looks for how they are similar. Contrast is an act of distinguishing by comparing differences. That means when someone contrasts two things, he/she looks for how they are different. How to organize a comparison and contrast essay?  There are two basic modes -the block mode -the point-by-point mode.  　　  The block mode one can describe all the similarities in the first supporting paragraph and then all the differences in the second supporting paragraph. The point-by-point mode one identifies several important points to compared and contrasted. the first supporting paragraph compare and contrast the two things according to the first point.
