? ? ? ? ? ? ? Between SenseSensibility and PridePrejudice was a life worth writing about. Becoming Jane Directed by Julian Jarrold Produced by Graham Broadbent Robert Bernstein Douglas Rae Written by Kevin Hood Sarah Williams Starring Anne Hathaway James McAvoy Julie Walters James Cromwell Maggie Smith Release Day 9 March 2007 Plot The younger daughter of Mr Austen and his wife wishes to be a writer and dreams of doing something what was then nearly unthinkable - marrying for love. She meets a promising but rebellious trainee lawyer on her age of 20. And then an Elizabeth/Darcy-esque love affair happenes between Jane and the lawyer, Tom Lefroy. Tom makes a bad first impression upon meeting Jane. They debate in the woods and compete in the cricket games. They fall in love with each other. Jane then begins the writing of First Impressions, the manuscript that will become Pride and Prejudice. The opposition from Tom’s uncle, on whom Tom financially depends, forces them to elope. But Jane eventually gives up and runs away from Tom for his reputation and career. Twenty years later Jane encounters Tom after a gathering. Though she’s never read in public, she makes a exception for Tom’s daughter who admires Janes novels. Postscript In her short life, Jane Austen wrote six of the greatest novels in England. Tom Lefroy became Lord Chief Justice of Ireland. Jane died on July 18, 1817 in Winchester and buried in Winchester Cathedral. Becoming a Legend “Shakespeare has had neither equal or second. But among the writers who, in the point which we have noticed, have approached nearest to the manner of the great master, we have no hesitation in placing Jane Austen, a woman of whom England is justly proud.” ——Thomas Babington Macaulay (《英国史》) “Miss Austen understood the smallness of life to perfection. She was a great artist, equal in her small sphere to Shakespeare...”
