Effects of Silicon on Lipid Peroxidation and Active Oxygen Scavenging System
in Leaves of Cucumber Seedlings under Salt Stress

Abstract :Two cucumber( Cucumis sativus L. ) cultivars were grown in a hydroponics culture system to study the ef-
fects of silicon( Si) on the lipid peroxidation and active oxygen scavenging systems in seedling leaves under salt stress.The
results showed that, under salt stress, adding Si could significantly increased the activitiesof superoxide dismutase( SOD) ,
ascorbate peroxidase(AsA-POD) and guaiacol peroxidase( G-POD) and the content of ascorbic acid(AsA) and glutathione
reduced form( GSH) in cucumber leaves,while markedly decreased the malondialdehyde(MDA) content. Compared with
the plants treated with salt alone, addition of Si significantly increased the relative water content( RWC) and decreased the
electrolytic leakage percentage in plants leaves for both cultivars, so that alleviated the damage of cucumber seedlings
caused by salt stress.The results of the present study suggested that Si is involved in the metabolic or physiological
change
