The real art of packing is to get the contents into a nice, compact shape that will stay that way during the roughest journey. Every buyer expects that his goods will reach him in perfect condition. Nothing is more infuriating to a buyer than to find his goods damaged or part missing on arrival. The seller must try to pack the goods in such a way that they will go through the ordeal of transport unscathed. 7-3 Practical Reading 实用阅读 Appropriate packing can prevent or minimize the damage of the shipment and promote sales. Therefore, it is another important element for the seller and the buyer to pay attention to. Suitable packing is noticeable in three aspects: 1) The buyer is under certain conditions entitled to reject the goods if they are not packed in accordance with his instructions or with the provisions agreed upon. Thus the seller should remember that the goods to be shipped should be supplied in stipulated packing conditions. 2) Packing should be designed to suit shipping requirements. In case inappropriate packing occurs, the master of the ship has the right to refuse to sign a clean B/L. The buyer is also entitled to refuse the acceptance of an unclean B/L. 3) Packing should conform to the regulations in the country of destination. Some countries collect heavy import duties on particular kinds of packing materials.
