UNIT 22 Description OBJECTIVES To be aware of the purpose of describing objects,people, and places To know the conventional ways of organizing the description To explore words and expressions used for describing objects,people,and places CONTENTS Lead-in Introduction Description of Objects Description of People Description of Places Practice Lead-in What do you know about description? (An alternative: ask students to describe a lost object orally) Introduction 1. How is your favourite object/people/place look like? Write a paragraph to describe it as detailed as you can. 2. Read your own writing or ask someone available to read it for you. Find: What you have written?If the description enables other people who have never seen it/him/her to understand? Introduction Description draws pictures of objects, people, and scenery through language. A good description: is based on close observation and vivid concrete details; enables readers to visualize the object, person or scene described easily. Describing Objects Usually appear in advertisements so that goods can be sold, or something found; Also occur in reports about a new invention or discovery; Comparatively objective. Describing Objects Task 1 Read the descriptions, and see if you can tell where (e.g. magazine or newspaper) they are probably appeared? Describing Objects The description of objects is usually plainly and clearly presented. The emphases are on logical arrangement, accuracy, complexity, and the purpose for which the description is required. Describing Objects Task 2 Read the passages and answer the questions. What does each of the two passages tell in general? Try to draw an outline of each of the two passages. Describing Objects: Language Focus Task 3 1. Skim the passages again, and identify the purpose for writing them. 2. How are the following parts described in Passage One? Answer in the spaces
