What is Low Context Culture Low context culture refers to a culture’s tendency not to cater towards in-groups. An in-group is defined by Edward T. Hall as being a discrete group having similar experiences and expectations, from which, in turn, inferences are drawn. Low context cultures, such as Germany or the United States make much less extensive use of such similar experiences and expectations to communicate. What is High Context Culture High Context Culture refers to a cultures tendency to use high context messages over low context messages in routine communication. This choice of communication styles translates into a culture that will cater towards in-groups, an in-group being a group that has similar experiences and expectations, from which inferences are drawn. In a high context culture, many things are left unsaid, letting the culture explain. Anthropologist Edward T. Hall received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1942 and has done fieldwork on intercultural relations with the Navajo, Hopi, Spanish-Americans, and the Trukese. During the crucial years of the foreign aid program in the 1950s he was Director of the State Departments Point IV Training Program. From 1959 to 1963 he directed a communications research project at the Washington School of Psychiatry where he studied nonverbal communication. What is Teleconference? A teleconference is a telephone meeting among two or more participants involving technology more sophisticated than a simple two-way phone connection. At its simplest, a teleconference can be an audio conference with one or both ends of the conference sharing a speaker phone. With considerably more equipment and special arrangements, a teleconference can be a conference, called a videoconference, in which the participants can see still or motion video images of each other.
