Unit 6 Improving Oral Communication Skills Giving speeches and presentations can be an integral part of your business career. A speech is a one-time event; your audience cannot leaf back through printed pages to review something you said earlier. You must make sure that your audience will hear what you say and remember it. To do so, please capture their interest immediately. Warm-up Read dialogues either by yourself or with a partner. Note down the key phrases and expressions. Practice reading the useful patterns and expressions. Warm-up Build up dialogues with your partner based on the following situations. Situation 1: You work for Oriental Trading Corporation. You want to get through to Mr. Black, the manager of Western Import Export Corporation. He is talking on another phone, and you’ll call back later. Situation 2: You make an appointment to see President Johnson in a construction company on Tuesday morning. You’d like to change your appointment to Thursday afternoon at 2:30, and give suitable reasons. Part II Building Confidence Improving Your Delivery Do you get a terrible feeling of fear or nervousness when you have to speak in front of a group of people? If you do, you are not alone. In fact, you belong to the majority of people who suffer from stage fright. But don’t worry! Nervousness shows that you care about the audience, the speech topic, and the occasion. If your palms get wet or your mouth goes dry, don’t think of nerves, think of excitement. Stage fright can give you a certain energy that you can put to positive use. Here are suggestions that can help you reduce your stage fright when speaking before a group. Task 1How Do I React to Stress? 1. Work in pairs. Divide a sheet of paper into two columns. In Column A, list nervous symptoms you experience when speaking to a group of people. In Column B, work out some possible ways to combat each symptom. Task 1How Do I React to Stress? 2. Compare your list with your partner
