FUNCTIONS OF AN OUTLINE Discuss: Why is an outline needed? Task 1 p84 An outline is: beneficial to both writers and readers; a reliable visual and conceptual compass to enable them to know the focus and the specific points of the writing. For writers A help to diagnose and eliminate problems with the paper, and to guarantee unity; A help to lessen the mental stress of drafting; A help to speed up the first draft with the guidance of this structured overview; A help to guarantee efficiency and coherence. For readers A milestone that guides their journey of reading and enables them to decide the reading skills that they could adopt; A map that provides them with the overall shape of the paper and helps them to locate their interesting areas; A ruler that enables them to measure the depth of the contents. 2.
