Why are there requirements for abstracts for professional papers and dissertations？ Task 2 p143 Read the following abstracts and answer the questions： 1） Do you know what the main points are in each of the papers following these abstracts？ 2） Are the contents in these abstracts relevant to your subject area？Do you want to read the entire paper after reading each of these abstracts？Why and why not？ What is an Abstract? It is an element of the preliminaries of a dissertation. ‘The role of the abstract is not to evaluate, but rather to describe, the dissertation.’ (Slade 2000:38) Why Needed? 1 Because editors need orientation, and readers use abstracts as guides to see if the contents are relevant to their interests. Abstracts in primary journals are collected into the world’s important information index encyclopaedia, e.g. Chemical Abstracts (Day, 1989). Whether the abstracts attract the viewers’ interest often determines whether the papers are accepted by the conference.
