Do you understand the meaning of a payment in Business English? Payment in foreign trade is often more complicated and difficult than selling in the home market because a great distance separates the exporter and his customer, and in many cases, several parties will have to be involved in order to get the payment made. The most generally used modes of payment in international trade are: 1) Remittance A) mail transfer(M/T) B) telegraphic transfer(T/T) C) demand draft(D/D) Practical Reading 实用阅读? 2) Collection A) documents against payment(D/P) B) documents against acceptance(D/A) 3) Letter of Credit(L/C) As far as the seller’s benefit is concerned, L/C is better than D/P, D/P at sight is better than D/P after sight, whereas D/P is better than D/A. Letters regarding letter of credit are usually written for the following purposes: 1) If the buyer fails to establish L/C, or it does not reach the seller in time, the seller has to write a letter to urge the buyer to establish the L/C. 2) If the seller finds that there are some discrepancies or some special clauses, to which the seller does not agree in the L/C, the seller should ask the buyer to make amendment. 3) If the seller fails to get the goods ready for shipment in time, the seller will have to ask for extension of the expiry date as well as the date of shipment of the L/C. 3. The process of issuing a letter of credit 1) The process of issuing a letter of credit begins with the buyer. 2) The buyer instructs his bank to issue an L/C in favor of the seller for the amount of the purchase. 3) The buyer’s bank (the opening bank) sends to its correspondent bank in the seller’s country, the L/C, giving instructions about the amount of th
