Unit 5 Analyzing Titles and Brainstorming OBJECTIVES To enable students: to understand the theme and the limitation of a given title to stimulate their thinking on a given title to write effectively CONTENTS Lead-in Introduction Analyzing titles Brainstorming Sample brainstorming Practice Another way Organize an outline Practice Lead-in How do you usually write in reaction to a given title of a writing assignment or examination? Introduction The first step in a writing process is to understand the title or topic, i.e. what we are going to write about—Analyzing Titles. Then is to generate ideas about the it. Analyzing Titles How could we analyze a given title? Analyzing Titles A title consists of a subject area/topic (What is the title about), its specific field (modifier) or/and its limitation. E.g. Foreign Language Teaching in China specific field subject/topic limitation Analyzing Titles Here the subject is “Teaching,” (not “Learning,”) The specific field of “teaching” , its modifier, is “Foreign Language.” Otherwise it could be “Chinese Teaching” or “General Science Teaching” It is limited “in China.” Not in “the U.S.A.”, or “Japan.” Analyzing Titles Analyzing a title is to identify the subject/topic of the writing, the specific field of the subject/topic, and the limitation of the subject/topic. Analyzing Titles Analyze the topics/subjects in the titles in Task 2 with your neigbour. Brainstorming What do you know about it? What does brainstorming mean to you? Brainstorming Brainstorming means generating ideas about the writing by asking the questions like: 1. “What do I know about the title? 2. To whom do I write?” To answer Question 1, it is advisable to think of as many ideas as possible and to write down everything that comes to mind. Several ways to brainstorm. Sample Brainstorming 1.
