Unit 9 Counteroffer The Study Purpose Introduction of Counteroffer When a buyer rejects a quotation or other offer, the letter should include the following contents but not every part is necessary. 1) The writer should thank the seller for his trouble to offer. Ex. We thank you for your letter of August 27, offering us 200 metric tons of the subject goods at US$ 125 per metric ton CIF Shanghai. 2) The writer expresses his regret that he can’t accept the offer, and states the condition or reason for rejection. Ex. Your quoted price will deprive us of any profit. Ex. Such practice will mean nil profit to us. 3. Sometimes partial acceptance is also a counter-offer. Ex. For the price we can accept but for date of shipment we can’t accept. 4. For terms of payment, the buyer asks the seller to change the method of payment which may also be one reason for the counteroffer. Ex. We can’t pay by a sight letter of credit. Is it possible to pay by a usance L/C? 5. When the buyer can’t accept the conditions offered by the seller, he can offer some concrete suggestions or amendments to the former offer. Ex. Should you be prepared to reduce your price by, say 10%, we might come to terms. Ex. If you reduce your quoted price by 2%, we will place a large order with you. 6. The writer should express the hope in the counteroffer letter that the receiver can accept his suggestion. Ex. Would you please approach your manufacturers to see if they find it acceptable? Ex. We hope you will consider our counter-offer fair and be favorable in view of the present market conditions here. 7. The writer may expect the answer from the receiver. Ex. Hope to receive your letter soon. Ex. Look forward to your reply. Ex. If later on you can see any chance to do better, please let us know, in the * * *
