After breakfast the boys wandered out into the play-ground. Here the day-boyswere gradually assem bling. Th ey w ere son s of t h e local clerg y, of theofficers at the Depot, and of such m anufacturers or m en of business as the oldtown possessed. Presently a bell rang, and they all trooped into school. Thisconsisted of a large, long room at opposite ends of which two under-m astersconducted the second and third form s, and of a sm aller one, leading out of it,used by Mr. Watson, who taught the first form . To attach the preparatory to thesenior school these three classes were known officially, on speech days and inreports, as upper, m iddle, and lower second. Philip was put in the last. Them aster, a red-faced m an with a pleasant voice, was called Rice; he had a jollym anner with boys, and the tim e passed quickly. Philip was su rprised when itwas a quarter to eleven and they were let out for ten m inutes rest.
The whole school rushed noisily into the play-ground. The new boys were told togo into the m iddle, while the others stationed them selves along opposite walls.
They began to play Pig in the Middle. The old boys ran from wall to wall while thenew boys tried to catch them : when one was seized and the m ystic words said- one, two, three, and a pig for m e - he becam e a prisoner and, turning sides,helped to catch those who were still free. Philip saw a boy running past and triedto catch him , but h is lim p g ave h im n o ch an ce; and the runners, taking theiropportunity, m ade straight for the ground he covered. Then one of them had thebrilliant idea of im it at in g Ph ilips clu m sy ru n . Other boys saw it and began tolau g h ; then they all copied the first; and they ran round Philip, lim pinggrotesquely, scream ing in their treble voices with sh rill lau g h t er. They losttheir heads with the delight of their new am usem ent, and choked with helplessm errim ent. One of them tripped Philip up and he fell, heavily as he always fell,and
