Conference Recordof the IEEE, 1990:1421-1429 vol.2. 英文原文 ELEVATOR SAFETY: GIVE THE MINER A BRAKE Thomas Barkland Abstract: Over a five-year period, there were at least 18 documentedcases of ascending elevators striking the overhead. In some cases, theaccidents resulted in serious injuries or fatalities. These accidentsoccurred on counter weighted elevators as a result of electrical, mechanical, and structural failures. Elevator cars are fitted withsafetiesthat grip the guide rails and stop a falling car; however, these devices donot provide protection in the upward direction. Rules and regulations applying to elevator safety have come underreview in response to these accidents. Some governing authorities havealready revised their regulations to require ascending caroverspeedprotection. This paper will discuss basic elevator design, hazards, regulations, and emergency braking systems designed toprovideascending car overspeed protection. In addition, a case-studyreport on apneumatic rope brake system installed and tested on a mineelevator willbe discussed. Introduction Elevators incorporate several safety features to prevent the car fromcrashing into the bottom of the shaft. Safeties installed on the car canprevent this type of accident from occurring when the machine brake failsor the wire ropes suspending the car break. However, the inherent designof the safety catch renders it inoperative in the up direction. In the upward direction, most elevators rely solely upon the machinebrake to stop the cage when an emergency condition occurs. Undernormal operation the machine brake serve only as a parking brake to holdthe cage at a stopped position. However, when an emergency condition isdetected, the majority of elevator controls rely solely upon the machinebrake to stop the car. In the U.S. mining indus
