Understand and sketch how the natural action occurs. This will take a further examination and understanding of how it operates. We can see the action take place but often do not understand what had to happen for it to take place. We must be able to tie the background into the key word. If we do not do this, the use of the natural mechanism may not work for us. What conditions and actions must take place for the phenomenon to occur. If they are not present...does it occur? Include these in the sketch. (Example: A cocklebur will easily stick to you pant legs or shoe strings but will not stick to steel or laminate. Why is this so?) This characteristic of the natural mechanism is part of the background. Utilize your various senses to describe the background. What is the sight, smell, feel, sound or taste of what must be in place for the action to occur. As soon as ideas come to mind, sketch them down. Although the keyword for two functions may be the same, the background and the way the mechanism operates to achieve results could be quite different. Example: A snake and a vine may both CLING to a tree limb. However, the underlying method (background) of how they accomplish that function are very different. Determine what basic engineering principles apply to the natural event. But remember, you are only 12 years old. Not quite an engineer, as yet. Gathering as much information about the background will assist us later as we use these mechanisms from nature in our product design. In order to evaluate the designs coming from this and subsequent steps, we must develop a set of evaluation criteria and attributes which are important to all customers (internal and external).
