Buck(赛珍珠) Pearl Sydenstricker Buck (June 26, 1892 — March 6, 1973) also known by her Chinese name Sai Zhenzhu ( 賽珍珠;), was an award-winning American writer who spent most of her time until 1934 in China. Her novel The Good Earth(大地) was the best-selling fiction book in the U.S. in 1931 and 1932, and won the Pulitzer Prize(普利策奖1932) in 1932. In 1938, she became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize(1938) in Literature, for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces. Pearl Buck was born on June 26, 1892, in West Virginia. Pearl was the fourth of seven children (and one of only three who would survive to adulthood). When she was three months old, she was taken to China, where she spent most of the first forty years of her life. From childhood, Pearl spoke both English and Chinese. She was taught principally by her mother and by a Chinese tutor. In 1934, Pearl moved permanently to the US. From the day of her move to the US, Pearl was active in American civil rights and womens rights activities. 赛珍珠 Pearl Buck died in March, 1973, just two months before her eighty-first birthday. By the time of her death in 1973, Pearl would publish over seventy books: novels, collections of stories, biography and autobiography, poetry, drama, childrens literature, and translations from the Chinese. She is buried at Green Hills Farm.
