John Galsworthy(1867 – 1933) 约翰 高尔斯华绥 Brief Introduction John Galsworthy(1867-1933) was one of the most distinguished English criticized realistic writer and playwright of the 20th century. He produced 20 novels,2plays,3collections of poetry,173 short stories,5 collections of essays,700 letters The Nobel Prize in Literature 1932 was awarded to John Galsworthy “for his distinguished art of narration which takes its highest form in The Forsyte Saga( 福尔赛世家).” His life His marriage His special feature His life John Galsworthy was born at Kingston Hill in Surrey, England into an established wealthy family. He was educated at Harrow and New College, Oxford. He was trained for the law, but he wasn’t interested in it and instead travelled abroad to look after the family’s shipping business interests. During these travels he met Joseph Conrad(康拉德),and the two future novelists became close friends. His marriage In 1895 Galsworthy began an affair with Ada Pearson cooper(1864-1956), the wife of his cousin. His close association with his cousin’s wife Ada, who had an unhappy married life, finally led to her divorce. After her divorce ten years later, the pair married on the 23 September 1905, and stay together until his death in 1933. His special feature He was a conventional writer, having inherited the fine traditions of the great Victorian novelists of the critical realism. Technically, he was more traditional than adventurous, focusing on plot development and character portrayal. He was also successful in his attempt to present satire and humor and straightforward language. His fictional world was honestly and compassionately constructed with interesting stories, lively characters and vivid dialogues.
