PAGE v 从交际翻译理论视看电影《卧虎藏龙》的字幕翻译 An Analysis of the Subtitle Translation of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon from the Perspective of Communicative Translation Theory Abstract With the development of film and culture industry and technology, we can enjoy films easily through cinema, television, VCD, DVD and Internet. Because of the growing demand to films, the importance of film translation has been increasingly exposed to us. As a special translation mode, subtitles translation is playing a more and more important and indispensable role in both the practice of translation and intercultural communication. In many European countries, the principles and theories of subtitle translation have been well developed because of the peculiarities of their own languages. But in China, the studies on subtitles translation for Chinese movies have relatively lagged behind other countries. Therefore, it is necessary for us to explore the profound significance of subtitles translation of Chinese films from a new perspective. Newmark’s communicative translation attempts to produce on its reader an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original. Its essence is free translation, naturalization and appropriate re-creation and it transmits information according to the target language instead of faithfully reproducing the original text. Under the guidance of the communicative translation, the translator has more freedom to explain the original text to produce smooth and understandable translation. Therefore, this theory pays attention to effect of the information. Under this theory, to achieve his communicative purpose, the translator must break the limitation of the original text to complete his translation. The film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, directed by Ang Lee intends to convey the boxing culture in a way that different from others in the Asia film market. And according to the communicative translations theory, the film titles are expected to sever the
