Chapter 4 Comprehending Through Context

Interpreting skills (10 mins)
Sometimes interpreters may come across difficult words that they cannot understand.In this situation, interpreters should acquire the ability to guess the meanings through the context.
There are two types of context, i.e. verbal context and non-verbal context. On the linguistic level, interpreters can guess the meaning of a word from the previous or following utterance. For instance, some words will be followed by an attributive clause or an appositive clause to further explain what it means. Moreover, interpreters can guess the meaning based on the logic of the context. Besides, quite often speakers will state an opinion repeatedly, so there are different words with similar meanings, which helps us to grasp the meaning.
As for the non-verbal context, interpreters should learn to guess the meaning according to the theme, content, tone of the speech, even the audience. Therefore, it is very essential to be familiar with the background information before doing interpreting.
