1. Introduction
An introduction section explains the rationale for
undertaking the study and clearly describes the main
purpose of conducting it by pointing out the gaps in the
research field and unsolved problems.
2. Four moves in the introduction section
Move 1: background
Move 2: previous related researches
Move 3: preparation for the present study
Move 4: the present study
Move 1: background
The first move identifies the larger scope or field in
which the study is situated.
Simply, move one is to inform readers of the background
knowledge.
Quite commonly, the introduction may begin by
providing a general definition of a key term.
Move 1: background
Contents in the background
• historical development
• current status
• concepts
• features and properties
• advantages and disadvantages
Move 2: previous researches
The second move usually summarizes the previous
researches. This could include a brief review of the
literature of previous and contemporary developments
in this area of study.
Move 3: preparing for the present research
The third move starts to prepare for present research by
indicating a gap, raising questions and extending a
finding.
Move 4: the present research
The last move will introduce the present study by giving
the purpose and describing the present research.
