Thomas Hardy (1840-1928)
Thomas Hardy is often regarded as
transitional writer as he lives at the turn
of the century. He is thought to be a 19th-
century novelist and a 20th-century poet.
In many respects, Hardy is trapped in the
middle ground between Victorian
sensibilities and more modern ones, and
between tradition and innovation.
