PREFACE. riTHEscopeand intention of this volume need someexplanation. It wasbegunwith the idea ofprovidinga text-book from which students, well grounded in the elementarybranches of physics, mightobtain someknowledgeof the laterdevelopments ; there is no doubt that such a book is neededurgently. But,in the course ofwriting, departuresfrom the originalscheme have been made. There arelengthy descriptions of theories which maybe assumed to be familiar to such students, and there are discussions of controversial questions which maybe thought undesirable in theearly stagesofstudy : it isimprobablethat a reader, who could gainmuch new information from the first chapter,couldgainmuch benefit from the last. On the.other hand, the book does not aspire to the dignity of a treatise designed tobring the results of the latest originalresearch to the notice of those who have made aspecial studyof the newer branches ofphysics : there is little that is not well-known to all professedstudents of thesubject.
