In addition to getting rid of the paper and digital clutter that’s getting in the way on your desk and computer, your brain is also filled with all kinds of clutter, usually clutter that’s making you feel really anxious and like you don’t have a handle on things. The key is to get the clutter out of your head and down on paper (either real paper or on your computer) and out of your head where it causes problems. Then you know you have it and can go back to it. In a few minutes we’re going to talk about the best strategy for dealing with “To Do” lists—for now the main point is to remember that if you get everything down on paper or on your computer, then it can stop cluttering up your brain. If I tell you to write things down, you immediately think of a “to do” list, right? And you think—I’ve done that before and it doesn’t work. It doesn’t help me manage my time any more effectively.
