Anything or ANYONE caught in the nip point between the belt and head or tail drum of even a small conveyor will be drawn further into the conveyor suffering amputation and worse - its almost inevitable. Some wrongly believe if they remove the guard and work near a nip point using a long handled tool, they will be fast enough to release the tool should it get caught. WRONG! Experience has shown too quickly they are up to their shoulder! BCC CONVEYOR ACCIDENTS Conveyor accidents continue to occur in UK Industry. Here are some that have happened in BCC. Before 1990 - at least one fatal. 1990 Northfleet - arm amputated cleaning underside of moving conveyor in quarry. 1993 Cauldon - serious spinal injuries when tension weight fell as cleaned spillage below. 1998 Weardale - arm injury when taken into nip between belt and drum 2001 Northfleet - employee suffered extensive injuries when carried on a conveyor through a hopper. BS5304 - good illustrations on general guarding systems (but now replaced) The Provision Use of Work Equipment (PUWER) 1998 ISOLATE LOCK OFF Before removing any guards or working on, below or above a conveyor where you could be injured , first ISOLATE LOCK OFF and follow the correct procedure. For the sake of others, replace secure the guard before de-isolating. Guarding of Head Tail Drums The head tail drums should be protected by a guard which EITHER prevents access to the in-running nip OR extends a minimum of 1m from the nip point. Guarding
