Design of pneumatic loading system for monorail application
Abstract
Electrical Monorails have several advantages over trackless haulage in underground mining, such as ability to negotiate steep vertical and tight horizontal curves, small operating room and less diesel fumes. It has been demonstrated that loading time is the main drawback to high advance rates in monorail application whereby a loader is used to load rocks into monorail containers. A pneumatic loading system can be expected to reduce the loading time. This paper describes a pneumatic loading system for monorail application and provides an overview of the techniques used in lifting broken rocks from the development face into the monorail hopper.

Biographical notes: Emmanuel K. Chanda is Associate Professor and Head of the Mining Engineering Department the Western Australian School of Mines, Curtin University of Technology. He has a BMinSc (Mining) from the University of Zambia, a MEng (Mining Engineering) from the Colorado School of Mines and a PhD in Mining Engineering from the Technical University of Berlin. He has over 25 years of experience in mining operations and academia. Prior to joining Curtin University he held senior roles with Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines. His research interests are modelling and optimisation of mining systems, novel mining methods and new generation mine haulage systems.
Bunda Besa is currently doing PhD in Mining Engineering at Curtin University, Western Australian School of Mines. Before starting his PhD, he worked for Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (Luanshya Division) after obtaining his Bachelors Degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Zambia. He has five years working experience in underground mining operations where he held various positions including Senior Planning Engineer. He was appointed Lecturer at the Univers
