He gained considerable repute for deep thoughts and outstanding writing skills. The Minister’s Black Veil is his representative short story , while studies and comments are comparatively rare. I am especially interested in the parable, because the black veil, the symbol in the story, is filled with mystery which I venture to explore.. This paper aims at interpreting the symbolic significance of the black veil, the profound meaning expressed in the tale as well, combining Hawthorne’s personal life course with it. Meanwhile, I tried to find a new angle and perspective to understand this parable. The conclusions are drawn on the basis of former studies and researches. This thesis consists of four parts. This first chapter mainly focuses on Hawthorne’s personal experiences and provides a brief introduction of The Minister’s Black Veil.
