Paper 2
I. Reading Comprehension (2 ’*15=30 ’)
Directions: After reading the three following passages, you will find 15 questions and make the
correct choice to each question.
Passage 1
There is probably no place anywhere in the civilized world today that is not visited by
tourists. The travel business offers a vast network or services for the comfort and convenience of
travelers. “Packagetours ”which include everything from transportati on to hotels, meals, and
sightseeing trips are offered by airlines, railroads and bus lines. Some steamship companies
specialize in cruises to different parts of the world. The cruises range from a few days to many
months. There are also private agencies that organize tours for young people of fourteen and over.
A visitor to a strange land today need never be at a loss for information about the place he is
visiting. There are innumerable travel books and guidebooks. The books advise what to see, wear,
and buy, and describe restaurants and hotels. Governments, states, and cities publish pamphlets
listing important sights for visitors. Some countries even have a government institution to promote
tourism. The United States Travel and Tourism Administration (USTTA) is such an agency under
the United States Department of Commerce, established in 1961 as the United States Travel
Service and renamed in 1981. It is headed by an under-secretary for travel and tourism. The
agency ’s main goal is to promote travel to the U.S. by residents of foreign countries. It conducts
programs to motivate travel agents and tour operators abroad to market U.S. destinations. USTTA
also works with domestic and foreign government officials to reduce barriers to international
travel.
