The Scarlet Letter is a long romantic novel about a tragic love affair in colonial North America. The main characters are Hester Prynne, her daughter Pearl, her lover the Reverend Mr. Dimmesdale, and her husband Roger Chillingworth. Hester married the doctor Chillingworth who has no affection for her and they lived in the Netherlands. Chillingworth decided?to?settle?in?New England, then sent?Hester there first. Two years passed but he still didn’t appear. Whereas Hester started a relationship secretly with Dimmesdale and they had a daughter. According to former Puritan law, Hester was guilty of adultery. She had to wear a red letter A on her chest and be punished publicly. The story began in Boston, a Puritan settlement in the seventeenth century. The heroine, Hester Prynne, was taken out of the towns prison, holding her infant daughter, Pearl, in her arms, with the scarlet letter A on her chest. Then came the first climax of this novel. An old onlooker on the sidelines was none other than Hesters husband who had disappeared for two years. He was bent on revenge when he learned that his wife had an affair with someone else and gave birth to a daughter. In the next chapters, Hesters lover, the Reverend Dimmesdale, seemed to be wasting away and then attracted Chillingworth. Chillingworth took a great interest in the seriously ill man and eventually moved into his home to become his private doctor. One afternoon, while Dimmesdale was sleeping, Chillingworth found a mark on his chest which convinced him that it was Dimmesdale who had destroyed his family. After the endless psychological torture from Chillingworth, Dimmesdales psychological pain deepened. Whereas Hesters kindness and humility gave her a reprieve from societys scorn. Hester saw that Dimmesdales condition was deteriorating and she bravely went to Chillingworth and asked him to stop abusing her lover. However, Chillingworth refused.
