Introduce the author About the story Three main characters Twelve beauties of jinling 4 1 2 3 CAO XUEQIN (1715?-63) was born into a family which for three generations held the office of Commissioner(长官) of Imperial Textiles（纺织品） in Nanking, a family so wealthy that they were able to entertain the Emperor Kangxi four times. But calamity（灾难 ） overtook them and their property was confiscated（将...充公 ）. Cao Xuegin was living in poverty near Peking when he wrote his famous novel The Story of the Stone (also known as The Dream of the Red Chamber), of which this is the second volume. The four other volumes, The Golden Days, The Warning Voice, The Debt of Tears and The Dreamer Wakes, are also published in the Penguin Classics. Introduction of the story The Dream of the Red Chamber describes the life and declining fortunes of a large feudal family. At the heart of the novel is a tragic（悲剧的 ） love story between Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai. 红楼梦介绍了生活和大型没落封建家庭。小说的核心是贾宝玉，林黛玉和薛宝钗的爱情悲剧故事。 Let’s introduce three main characters Baoyu is a rebel （反叛 ）of feudal noble class. His rebellious （造反的 ）character is fully expressed in his attitude of indifference to the ways of Aristocratic（贵族的 ） life .He holds in contempt the tiresome men and greatly sympathizes with women, oppressed and trampled （践踏 ）by the feudal system, demonstrating （显示 ）his distinct democratic thoughts Lin Daiyu She is also a rebellious （反抗的 ）figure of the novel. She represents ,to a certain degree ,women’s unfortunate fate in feudal society, their resistance（抵抗 ） to its oppression and passionate（热情的 ） pursuit for true love. But her weakness is in her restrained （受限制的 ）and fragile（虚弱的） character. Xue Baochai She is one of the principal characters in the classic Chinese novel Dream of the Red mansions（官邸 ）. She is extremely beautiful and socially graceful（得体的）, but is noted for her inner coldness .She is portrayed（扮演 ） as a conventional （传统式 ）woman of feudal society, and she is also a tragic figure. T
