Text analysis:
This text uncovers the geography of Canada following two Chinese girls travel route across Canada. The travel story consists of two passages. This one describes the part from Vancouver all the way to Toronto. It has a clear place-line, which is the route of the cross-Canada train (the True North), namely Vancouver-Rocky Mountains-Calgary-Thunder Bay-the Great Lakes-Toronto. Key words are mainly on description and geography, such as continent, scenery, surround, urban, eastward, harbour, etc.. There are some key phrases or structures like rather than, settle down, have a gift for. Also, we can find many noun clauses which Ss (students) have just learned in the former units. The value of this text is help Ss know the geography of Canada and feel the beauty of our colorful planet.
Student analysis:
Many Ss have difficulties understanding the compound sentences. Whats more, most Ss only know basic information about Canada. Getting to know this far-away country will be interesting for them. Ss need more practice on fast reading (for main ideas) and analyzing discourse structure (for certain clues or lines).
