Nobodys Perfect— How the American People Deal with the Drawbacks of Martin Luther King, Jr. The incident was first reported in the Sunday Telegraph on Dec. 3, 1989, and then reported in Chronicles in Sept.1990. Several other major newspapers followed with similar stories. There were dissenting voices on this issue. Some thought King committed theft for there were problems of plagiarism without clear quotations and citations of sources, which caused serious damage to his reputation. Others believed that although King acted improperly, which might be fatal for a scholar, King’s main achievement was not in academia but in his contribution to the Civil Rights Movement. After all, nobody’s perfect, and it seemed to provide no hindrance to King’s career as a preacher, powerful public speaker and leader of a social movement, and that’s why the tolerant American people finally displayed their rationality and understood his historical position. Sullivan When The New York Times published an advertisement on March 29, 1960 that accused Alabama officials of willfully abusing civil rights activists, Montgomery police commissioner Sullivan filed suit for defamation. Alabama courts ordered the Times to pay half a million dollars in damages. Later, the Times appealed to the Supreme Court. The justices, recognizing Alabamas application of libel law threatened both the free press and equal rights for African Americans, unanimously sided with the Times.
