There was once a miller who had three sons. When he died he left each of them an inheritance. The eldest received the mill… …the middle son received a donkey… …and the youngest was left with just a cat. The cat could see that his master was unhappy.He had his master bring him some boots and a bag. Puss put some lettuce in the bag and pretended to be dead.Soon a curious rabbit stuck its head in and Puss caught it. Puss took the rabbit to the palace and told the king it was a gift from his master, the Marquis of Carabas. The next day Puss pretended to be dead and caught a pair of partridges. Puss took the partridges to the palace and told the king it was a gift from his master, the Marquis of Carabas. One day Puss heard the king would be passing a nearby river in his royal coach. Puss told his master to take off all his clothes and bathe in the river. “Help! My master, the Marquis of Carabas is drowning!” The king recognised the cat and had his men help the boy out of the river and dress him in fine clothes. Puss told the king that thieves had taken his master’s clothes but really he had hidden them under a rock. The king was so impressed with the Marquis of Carabas in his fine garments that he asked him to ride with him in the royal coach. The king’s daughter at once fell in love with the Marquis of Carabas. Puss told the workmen in the fields to tell the king the land belonged to the Marquis of Carabas or he would cut them into mincemeat! When the king asked the workmen who owned the land, they told him it was the Marquis of Carabas. The king was impressed. The land really belonged to a rich ogre. Puss ran ahead of the coach to the castle where the ogre lived. Puss went to see the ogre. He told him he had heard he could transform into any animal he wished. To prove he could the ogre turned himself into a big lion. Puss challenged the ogre to turn himself into a tiny mouse, but it was a trick. He caught the mouse and ate it!
